Pump Foil

Dial in technique, build muscle memory, and feel the pump.

Pump foiling is all about timing, cadence, and efficiency, using your legs and body weight to keep the foil flying without external power. The hardest thing about pumping for most riders is not the movement itself, but getting enough repetitions, building muscle memory, and focusing on one thing at a time to really feel how the foil wants to glide. Dock starts, ladders, and tow starts all work, but they require specific locations, significant athleticism, confidence, bigger wings, and a lot of trial, error, and full resets for every short attempt.

Foil Drive removes the need for a dock, boat, PWC, or wing and lets you spend far more of your water time actually on foil and practicing. With the motor mounted close to the board, you can use a light assist to build speed and lift off in flatwater, then practice short glides using the potential energy from mast height alone. From there, riders work through clear, natural stages from controlled straight line glides, to ollie or pump track style hops, to full pump runs that are completely unassisted once airborne. The result is more quality attempts per session and a far faster path to true pump foiling.

FIND YOUR RHYTHM

Use your Foil Drive to repeat the same takeoff over and over, recover from touch downs, maintain speed and consistency throughout your attempts, and build the confidence to move your feet, load and unload the foil, and project forward efficiently. Master the technique of staying high on the mast, learn how foils carry speed, and develop real pump technique without needing a perfect dock, a tow partner, or ultra large pump foils.

Much like an eAssist mountain bike, you can work hard when you want to, rest when you want to, and use as much or as little assist as you need while still building real skill and enjoying nature. Flatwater days become training sessions, and your technique progresses independently - faster and more consistently than with any other method.

Compatible with dedicated Foil Drive boards, prone boards, mid lengths, and SUPs, Foil Drive turns any body of water into a pump training ground. Whether you are chasing your first unpowered glide or pushing longer flatwater lines, the Foil Drive assist helps you ride longer, learn faster, and lock in the rhythm that makes pump foiling such an addictive workout.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pump foiling?

Pump foiling is riding a foil using body weight and leg movement to generate lift and maintain flight without any external power. It focuses on timing, cadence, and efficiency to keep the foil gliding.

How does Foil Drive help with pump foiling?

Foil Drive lets riders spend more time on the foil and less on resets or setups. With a light assist, you can build lift and speed, repeat takeoffs, recover from touch downs, and gradually reduce reliance on the motor as your technique improves.

Do I need a dock, boat, PWC, or wing to pump foil with Foil Drive?

No. Foil Drive removes the need for specific locations or external power sources, letting riders practice anywhere flatwater is available. This dramatically increases repetition, skill acquisition, and muscle memory.

Can I use Foil Drive to practice short glides or advanced pump techniques?

Yes. Riders can start with controlled straight-line glides, progress to ollie-style hops or pump track maneuvers, and eventually perform full unassisted pump runs—all using the assist to maintain speed and confidence during learning stages.

Does using Foil Drive mean I’m not building real skill?

Not at all. Foil Drive functions like an eAssist mountain bike: it allows riders to work hard when needed, rest when needed, and practice efficiently. You build real technique, learn proper foot placement, and develop rhythm while still enjoying consistent progression.

Recommended by Gwen Le Tutour

Foil Drive ambassador Gwen Le Tutour's ideal setup for learning to pump foil is:

First, work on the pop to transition from Foil Drive to gliding up high on the mast, just one hop, and glide down all the way to transition back to Foil Drive. Don’t let go of the trigger, keep it powered the entire time, it will help you focus on the hop and make the process smoother. Once you get one hop dialed, add one more hop at a time until you can get a few in a row. Always make sure you bring the nose after every hop, the biggest mistake is to land nose up after your hop and make the foil stall. This video will give you a visual on how to do it.
