Flatwater Foiling

Progress faster, cruise farther, refine technique, and enjoy pure foil flow.

Flatwater foiling opens the door to learning and riding in complete control. Lakes, rivers, bays, harbors, and calm ocean zones offer smooth water that removes variables like surf, wind, and chop. This makes flatwater the most consistent environment for beginners learning to foil, and for experienced riders refining pumping, foot placement, balance, carving, and high-speed handling.

Foil Drive adds a new level of versatility. Riders can keep the motor close to the board with a short cable for low-drag assist during pump practice or early learning, or switch to a longer eFoil-style cable for quiet, effortless cruising and higher-speed exploration. For the cleanest possible feel, the system pairs seamlessly with Foil Drive collaborative integrated alloy or carbon masts, hiding all wiring inside the mast for minimal drag, minimal ventilation, and a streamlined, high-efficiency setup.

FOIL ANYWHERE

Whether you want slow, stable lift for your first flights or fast, responsive eFoiling on the lightest gear available, Foil Drive makes flatwater sessions universally compatible and accessible. Practice safely at your own pace, build muscle memory, or enjoy long-distance cruising without relying on wind, waves, or a tow source.

The Foil Drive system mounts easily to any prone, mid-length, SUP, wingboard, or inflatable foil board, giving you the full spectrum of flatwater riding -- from learning your first carves to fast, flowing, high-speed foiling -- on any body of water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is flatwater ideal for learning to foil?

Flatwater removes variables like waves, wind, chop, and crowds, making it the most consistent environment for learning. This allows riders to focus purely on balance, stance, lift control, and technique without external distractions.

Is Foil Drive suitable for complete beginners in flatwater?

Yes. Foil Drive is one of the easiest ways to learn foiling in flatwater. The smooth, adjustable assist allows beginners to stand up, achieve stable lift, and progress at their own pace in a calm, controlled setting.

What’s the difference between assist mode and eFoil mode?

Foil Drive can be configured with a short cable for low-drag assist, ideal for learning, pumping practice, or refining technique. With a longer cable, it becomes an eFoil-style setup for quiet cruising, higher speeds, and effortless exploration.

Can I practice pumping and technique with Foil Drive?

Absolutely. Foil Drive is an excellent tool for refining pumping, foot placement, balance, carving, and high-speed control. Riders can use minimal assist to maintain speed while focusing on efficiency and clean technique.

Does Foil Drive feel different from a traditional eFoil?

Yes. Foil Drive is significantly lighter and more modular than traditional eFoils. When paired with integrated alloy or carbon masts, all wiring is hidden inside the mast, resulting in lower drag, cleaner flow, and a more natural foil feel.

Recommended by Dave West

Foil Drive ambassador and Dave West's ideal setup is learning to E-foil is:

  • Cable Height: Start with the 60cm and grab a 15cm when you start to progress.
  • Recommended board: 5ft - 6ft Depending on weight. Size your board more around it's length rather than it's volume. I.e 6ft for 100kg rider.
  • Recommended foil: Around 900-1100 sqm & aspect ratio between 8-9 is ideal for an all round foil that you can grow into. 1130s from Code is a great example.

Quick tip:

Always keep the nose of the board just barely breaking the surface of the water. Arch your back to help keep the board level. Get your front knee on the board and slowly stand up from there.

Recommended by Guenther Oka

Foil Drive ambassador and Guenther Oka's ideal setup for learning to E-foil with is:

  • Foil Drive Fusion or Assist MAX
  • Fusion 860 Battery or MAX High power
  • High Power Motor
  • 3 Blade Propellers
  • Cable Height: The shorter cable you go, the less mast you have to e-foil / carve around on, but the easier it is to start. The longer cable you go, the more mast you have to e-foil / carve around, but the foil wants to rise more and the more difficult it can be. For a true e-foil experience I recommend the 60cm cable for 73cm masts and 70cm cable for 83cm masts. However the 25cm cable can offer a friendly entry level experience.
  • Recommended board: Something with a lot of volume and that is wide under the chest. Think 50 liters and more with a width of 20cm. This creates a lot of float and a stable platform to pop up on.
  • Recommended foil: Something low aspect (aspect ratio of 4-5) with a big surface area (1200-1600 sq cm) that will generate lift at slow speeds.

Quick tip:

Always keep the nose of the board just barely breaking the surface of the water. Arch your back to help keep the board level. Get your front knee on the board and slowly stand up from there.
